A life in objects

Last week a company auctioned off hundreds of David Lynche’s belongings. People put bids on his old cameras, directors chair, art books, old scripts, and even a set of cables that racked up thousands of dollars worth of bids.

When you scroll through the site it’s like a virtual art exhibition where you get a glimpse into the life of one of our times most iconic movie directors.

I find it fascinating thinking about the objects not only in people like David Lynche’s life, but the objects in our own lives.

It’s so beautiful how commonplace objects can become embedded with meaning.

Which brings me a question I’d love you to think about.

Working while your asleep

Sometimes when I’m faced with a creative problem I don’t know how to solve, I pause, and sleep on it. No longer do I try force solutions, I just trust and let my unconscious do all the work.

It’s kind of the same when you’ve lost your keys and then the moment you stop looking for them, they suddenly appear in front of you.

Owning your story

Last weekend I helped out my friend Dom on his latest music video. From my POV the video captured the tension between wanting more but still feeling like your stuck in the same place.

I found it inspiring seeing Dom embrace where he’s from, filming half of the video at his home in Belmore. Especially since when I was younger, I was often embarrased of where I lived. Which sounds silly I know, but it’s funny how when you mature and start to connect the dots, you realise everything you disliked, or made you uncomfortable actually gave you texture, and character.

And in a weird way, I’m grateful for everything I’m not because just like Ye said, It made me everything I am.

I really admire Dom’s willingness to own his story, and the struggle that comes with having a dream, and not knowing how or when it’s going to come into fruition, but still having the guts to walk that path.

A public thank you to my parents

Recently someone asked me who my biggest inspirations were, and for a moment I thought about saying the names of some directors, authors, and other artists I look up to, however in that moment I remembered it’s my parents who inspire me the most.

Which reminded me of a blog post I wrote last year on this exact topic.
